The Conestoga Valley community has the 2nd highest homeless population in Lancaster County. In the 2023- 2024 school year there were 172 children considered homeless within our school district.
As we look at our community, there are resource accessibility gaps for the underserved within our community. Affordable housing and homelessness are problems for many of our neighbors in Conestoga Valley. These are complex issues that people are struggling with.
We have big dreams and ideas of how we desire to be a bridge to fill in these and other gaps ~ things like turning a hotel or motel into transitional housing, rehabbing single family homes so that they can house several families in an affordable way. We'd love to partner with landlords in our community! We want to serve as a liaison between some of our neighbors in need & landlords, as we walk alongside our neighbors in their goals of thriving health.
In the meantime we are doing a few other things. One of the things we are doing, is attending Township meetings to learn about things that are happening and to be an advocate for housing solutions and talking with other organizations doing good work in this area. We are also in regular coaching meetings with the Directors of the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition, to learn best practices and programs that will bring opportunities for more sustainability. When community members reach out to us we take the time to listen to their story, to learn more about their situation, and to see what resources we can direct to them. We desire to be a bridge for someone as they take the next steps towards housing stability.
We want to be humble learners as we engage with these issues. We are busy listening to others, asking questions, meeting with people and organizations who work in these areas. and taking time as we work towards continuing to launch programs. Conestoga Valley SEEDS understands that working through housing concerns is an important part of having a healthy, thriving Conestoga Valley community.
More to come!
We would love your help with one of our programs. When we connect with families who are homeless, have children and are living in hotels, we like to give a small gift to the children. Would you consider purchasing items from our Amazon Wishlist to help with this?
